The Mariachis in Boyle Heights have historically gathered in Mariachi Plaza and have entertained for countless working class events, parties, and family gatherings. Their resonating traditional songs of the joys and struggles of everyday people, and the community they inspire, have made the plaza the cultural landmark that it is today.

The Mariachis who gather in the plaza today rely on the community coming to the plaza to hire them. With the recent state repression of community gatherings brought on by Covid-19, there is no longer any work left for them. Even when these restrictions are lifted, the onset of the new great depression will leave no one in a position to provide them work. The Mariachi’s are left with no work and no promise of work any time soon.

Without work, many working class people in Los Angeles are forced to rely on state aid like stimulus checks or unemployment benefits. Due to the nature of the Mariachi’s work and their lack of documentation, the state will not provide any of this for them. With no work and no aid, the Mariachi’s will not be able to survive this economic crisis. We cannot allow for this community to go unaided and ignored, while the city continues to demonize those who are “non-essential” but must still work to survive.

This fundraiser is being put together to help gather the funds necessary for the Mariachis of Boyle Heights to be able to pay rent, food, and any other necessity themselves or their families may need during this crisis.

Please donate and share! Reach out to Defend Boyle Heights on social media to find out how you can get involved with their struggle! We cannot let those most affected by this crisis go ignored! We must stand with and fight alongside the Mariachis and all those struggling due to Covid-19 restrictions and the developing economic crisis.
