- This summer I am joining a group of people from different community groups around Glasgow who will be travelling to Malawi in July to work with the community in Ekwendeni . Staff from Queen's Park Football Club, Teachers from local schools, medical professionals and members of various Churches in Glasgow are working on delivering a programme in Ekwendeni during the Malawi school break. It will include children and adults from the local community who will be involved in various activities such as film nights, crafts, IT tutorials, sports, music & dance, cooking, basic first aid and personal health, wellbeing & hygeine. At the moment many aid projects work to send resources such as clothes & knitting out to areas in Malawi, however, the communities who receive them don't have the manpower or resources to distribute these effectively to benefit the people who need it and a lot of the items sent remain in storage for long periods of time. Our project aims to take realistic resources which we can distribute and teach with (such as medication, IT hardware and sports equipment) and most importantly share skills and values while working in partnership with the church and with the community groups who will benefit most. We intend to teach about equality and overcome some of the bullying culture towards young females which is very common within communities in Malawi. It is these factors which make our project slightly different from some of those that are already running. Fundraising Bungee Jump: On the 21st of June I'll be completing a 160ft bungee jump ( and dragging my sister Nicole along with me!) to raise money for the project. The jump will take place at Braehead at 2PM. Anyone is welcome to come along and support or laugh at us! I'd be extremely grateful for any amount of sponsorship people feel they'd like to contribute and I'm sure you'll agree it's a really worthwhile project to back. Gala Dinner: The group have organised a Gala Dinner and Ceilidh evening at the beautiful Carnbooth Hotel. Tickets are £25 per person and anyone is welcome to come along. There will be raffles and games on the evening also. Tickets are available from the Queen's Park Football Club offices. Contact 0141 632 1275 and ask for Rachael, George or Christine. Rachael :)
