BACK TO SCHOOL THROUGH SPORTS:

Aim:

  • To improve overall facilities at primary schools in Maganga area (and expand our reach in due course).
  • To encourage children to go to school.
  • To combat illegal fishing practices on the lakeshore, where young children are often seen assisting fishermen instead of attending school.
  • To use the platform of primary schools to educate youth about conservation needs & initiates in their area, for a more sustainable future.

Background:

Many young children are involved in illegal fishing practices on the shores of Senga Bay. Rather than going to school, they spend their days helping pull up nets (often associated with illegal and unsustainable fishing practices), trading their time for a few small fish.

In November 2021, Blue Zebra launched a football and netball tournament between three under-resourced primary schools in our community, namely Kapira, Kacherenje and Maganga Primary Schools.

Two significant donations of kits and sports equipment were made by visiting guests.

The first kits were donated by Horsley football club from Surrey in England, coordinated by Steffan who is actively involved in supporting and growing football in local communities across Malawi and Zambia.

We would like to keep up the momentum and sponsor additional supplies.

Tournaments:

Official launch: Friday 19th November, 2021

First official fundraising tournament: 16th July - 6th August 2022

Fixtures:

  • 16 July 2022: Maganga vs Kachelenje
  • 23 July 2022: Maganga vs Kapira
  • 30 July 2022: Kachelenje vs Kapira
  • 18 August 2022: Finals

Where the funds will go:

  • Sports equipment
  • Football & netball kits
  • Team sponsorship
  • First aid kits
  • Educational materials
  • Projects put forward by the schools to improve facilities

Blue Zebra Island Lodge have sponsored the initial running and logistical costs, but much more support is needed to make this a successful long-term project with broader benefits for the community.

Updates will follow, with pictures from the first event and ongoing developments.

Thank you for your support!
