Overview

The Municipality of Shuto Orizari located in the northern part of the City of Skopje, Republic of Macedonia is the largest Roma settlement in Europe and the only municipality where Romani is the official language. According to the 2002 census, the exact composition of the population was 17,357 of which 13,311 (76.6%) are Roma. Part of the population approximately 2000 families are living in substandard housing and improvised buildings with no electricity or water supply network. The poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, juvenile marriages, dropping out of education, lacking of identification documents, lacking of health protection and insurance are the most common problems that the children coming from this settlement are facing and some of them represent the reason of their forced begging on the streets of Skopje.

The Daycare centre for street children is the only project organization that works with this target group of children and their families in Shuto Orizari since 2006. Our primary goal is to break the chain of forced child begging and poverty, to protect the children’s rights, to provide them with a good childhood and social inclusion.

Aim of Daycare centre for street children in Shuto Orizari, Skopje

The Daycare centre for street children is a long-term project implemented by the non- governmental, non-profit and non-partisan organization Defence for children’s rights Association of Skopje, Republic of Macedonia.

The Daycare centre for street children is located in the Municipality of Shuto Orizari in Skopje. Its premises were in the “8th April” Kindergarten in Shuto Orizari until the fire that happened on 1th March 2017 that burnt the kindergarten to the foundation. Since then the Daycare centre is located in 2 improvised classrooms and 1 office in the hospital in Shuto Orizari and currently only 4 skilled workers (social worker, psychologist, teacher and project coordinator) are working with more than 100 street involved children aged 4-18 with housing in Shuto Orizari.

These children are facing a great poverty, are victims of insufficient parental care and domestic violence, their parents are forcing them in the act of begging on the streets instead of enrolling them in the public kindergartens or elementary schools that are free of charge in our country. This kind of child labor deprives the children of their childhood, interferes with their ability of education that is socially, mentally and physically dangerous and harmful.

Through this campaign we aim to continue the work of the Daycare centre for street children and therefore to provide the children and their families with food, clothes, hygienic supplies, useful educational and creative workshops, school supplies, socio-psychological support and counseling.
