I am a folk/roots singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Canada, and I am preparing to release a debut solo album titled Cottonwood in the fall of 2018 on CD, vinyl, and digital streaming platforms. The recording is complete, but there is still plenty of work involved to get it off the ground.
WHAT THE FUNDS RAISED WILL GO TOWARDS
I have about $10,000 in costs still to come:
- Mastering by Maeghan Ritchat.
- CD/vinyl/merch design and digital layout by Roberta Landreth.
- CD duplication and vinyl pressing by Polar Bear Productions.
- Publicity by Fritz Media to help get the word out to Canadian media sources.
If the funding target is met and exceeded, I will have the option to:
- Create more official music videos to coincide with the album roll-out.
- Expand my merchandise (fair-trade t-shirts and hats).
- Hire a publicist in the UK and Europe to release this album overseas.
There are 11 original songs on Cottonwood, whittled down from an initial 35. I wrote most of them in the living room of my home in sunny St. James, Winnipeg, or in a woodstove-heated cabin on Florence Lake in Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial Park where my great-Grandparents built a retreat. I picked the songs that I am the most proud of; maybe for their universal truths, or my fondness of the characters within them. Sometimes it is their melody that I adore, or the memories they hold, or their tendency to make me want to just sit and think. I hope that you enjoy them, and that in time they come to mean something to you, too.
It is no secret that there is an overwhelming lack of female representation in the music industry. Women are especially under-represented in album production and audio engineering, where it is estimated that they make up between 5-7 percent of the industry. It was really important to me to make this album the way that I wish that all things were made - by hiring equal proportions of badass men and women, and to change the narrative about who is in the room when records are being made.
