Hi, my name is Maciej,

Not so long ago, I was able to qualify for an international exchange program for PhD students between the Jagiellonian University and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México! For me, a future archaeologist, it is as exciting as the meeting of the film idol of all the discoverers of the past, Indiana Jones!

In the second semester of this academic year, January-June 2019, while being in Mexico, I will be able to establish contacts with many archaeologists, anthropologists, ethnographers and other researchers of our fascinating human species. I will also visit many places known from tourist brochures and adventure films - Tula, Monte Albán, El Tajín, Cholula, Palenque, Chichen Itza (the last two belong to the Maya culture, which was the main theme of Mel Gibson's “Apocalypto”), Teotihuacán (where one of the scenes from “Frida” by Julie Taymor was shot). I will be able to visit many interesting museums and take part in international conferences. I'm already so happy for that!

I am currently in the third year of doctoral studies at the Institute of Archeology of one of the most renowned universities in Poland, the Jagiellonian University. The subject of my doctorate is the role and significance of children in the Maya civilization - based on the patterns of burials used by them - in the territory of today's Petén department (northern Guatemala). In spite of such a precise topic, I would like to include in my work references to other cultures living in Central America. A trip to Mexico will help me a lot.

Unfortunately, the Jagiellonian University and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México only cover the cost of plane tickets and tuition fees. I have been working hard all my holidays, but I am still missing 12 000 zlotys (around 3 240 USD/2 790 EUR/2 490 GBP) to fully cover the travel expenses (among others for life, transport, entry tickets to scientific institutions and museums). That is why YOUR help is very much needed for me. For every amount of money you give me, I will be very grateful. :) :) :) In addition to personal thanks, those who support me will receive postcards sent from historical parts of Mexico, I will also provide photo-reports from them.

I hope that thanks to your support and my hard work, I will be able to show the importance of the youngest members of the pre-Columbian community in a new light. And that thanks to this children, often overlooked or marginalized in scientific research, will become more visible.

Once again, thank you very much!

Maciej
