Welcome to my GoGetFunding page!

In July of next year, I will be travelling as a volunteer to Cape Town, South Africa as part of the Plan My Gap Year (PMGY) Childcare Project. Below, I will introduce you to the details of my programme and give you a little taster of the kind of things I will be doing while in SA. Before I begin I would like to thank you for visiting this page and for any donation you may make to this worthwhile cause.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

PMGY supports a range of day care centres that provide essential childcare facilities to impoverished families of nearby communities in Cape Town. During my stay in South Africa (19th July - 8th August 2015) I will be working to assist over-worked staff in delivering care to underprivelledged children aged between just 3 months old and 5 years. I will be participating in a variety of tasks which are likely to include feeding the children, creating learning materials, cooking and cleaning and general supervision. My role will also include teaching reading, writing and basic maths, aswell as engaging in arts and crafts. For me, the most important task of the volunteer is to be the positive role model which most of the children involved in the programme sadly lack.

WHAT IS MY MOTIVATION TO WORK ON THE PROGRAMME?

On this programme, the majority of the children in attendence come from townships and other underdeveloped areas where social problems such as HIV/Aids, drug use, gang violence, malnutrition and abuse are rife. I am of the belief that every child should have the same opportunities as the next, regardless of their background, and I want to support this project as the daycare centres provide a facility for this. The staff and volunteers aim to provide an environment where the children can develop their full potential on all levels; emotionally, physically and socially. I couldn't think of anything more rewarding than being involved in such an amazing movement and therefore I chose to volunteer with this specific programme.

WHAT IS MY TARGET AND WHY?

I have a large target of  £1,700. This will firstly cover the essential costs of the volunteer trip, including flights, criminal background checks, accomodation etc. Once I have settled the basic costs of the trip, I intend to spend the rest of the donations on basic learning and play materials for the centres I will be visiting. On visiting the organisations, I will be able to determine what sort of materials the centres urgently require and hope to buy and provide these for the centres while I am in Cape Town. This could include books, writing materials, crockery, clothing and other essentials.

HOW DO I PLAN TO RAISE THE MONEY?

I will be organising a variety of fundraisers throughout the course of the year and will use this site as my main portal for sponsors. I hope many of you will come along to my events and I look forward to seeing you there! Anything I do to raise funds will be publicised on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as through more traditional methods (posters and the paper), if you can share information on my events to those you think may be interested I would be forever grateful.

WELL DONE! If you have made it to the bottom of this page, I commend you (I know I can ramble for years). Thanks for visiting my page and should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!  Now to get the ball rolling.....
