Roberto Payac Veloso, 47, ‘Tinggoy’ or ‘Tits’, as he is more popularly known by family and friends, is a kind, easy to get along with, funny, and smart person who is greatly loved by everyone. He is my uncle, my mom's younger brother and the youngest of eight siblings . He has a wife and two sons, 16 and 13 years old.

In the morning of the 21st of September 2018 at 8.30 AM, he climbed up the roof, 7 meters high, to fix the TV antenna. He was watching a sport game but the reception wasn’t clear. And at some point, unfortunately, he fell hard on the ground, breaking his neck terribly.

He was rushed to the hospital, unconscious. When he gained consciousness, he's unable to move his extremities (both upper and lower), struggling for air, and admitted to the ICU at 10 PM.

He stayed in the Intensive Care Unit for seven (7) days.

He is now attached with three tubes: tracheostomy serves as an airway to assist his breathing, NGT to enable him to take in food, and catheter for convenience in emptying his bladder.

The doctor is under the impression that he might have slipped because of his high blood sugar, 300 mg/dL, when checked in the hospital.

Chief Complaint: Quadriplegia

Admitting impression: Spinal Cord Injury Brief

Clinical History: Patient developed quadriplegia after a fall from a 7-meter high roof. Unknown cause.

Final Diagnosis: Complete Spinal Cord Injury secondary to Function Dislocation C4 - C5 due to fall.

Uncle Tits has been receiving treatment at home because of our fear on further infection in the hospital, plus with the skyrocketing bills that all adds up; we believe it is best to care for him in the comfort of Lolo and Lola's residence in Leyte, which eventually is his home. We rented a mechanical ventilator (primarily assisting him to breathe) and a caregiver to attend to his medical needs. However, even with a collective monetary support contributed by everyone in the immediate family, the daily cost for his medical sustenance would not suffice.

Here is the breakdown of monthly expenses:

1. Ventilator - 30,000 php

2. Oxygen (consumes 1 cycle= 1.5 days); (30 days/1.5= 20 cycles x 1000 = 20,000 php)

3. Glucerna (milk) (1 kg= 4 days)

30 days/ 4= 7.5 kgs x 1,767 = 13, 252.50 php

4. Caregiver (2 persons x 250/day) = 500

Care assistant (1 person x 100/ day) = 100

= 600 php x 30 days = 18,000 php

5. Medicines and others approximately 5,000 php

= 86, 252.50 php (roundabout this amount per month)

In this regard, on behalf of our family, we would like to seek for your financial assistance. Your kind donations will really mean a lot for my uncle's health.

Help my uncle breathe naturally again, to see him stand, walk again, and speak to you all his message of love and gratitude. Salamat!
