Love Without Boundaries/Livelihood Program for Mamacao

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

In the book of John chapter 6, verses 1-14, our Lord Jesus feeds the five thousand people who came from many parts of Jerusalem to hear him speak and be ministered to, with five loaves of bread and two fishes, in the same way, God wants us to help people when they are hungry or needed food. The Lord Jesus‘ heart for the poor, oppressed and suffering is shown in the gospels. He would always have time to minister to them.

God has given us the command to help the poor and to also help them overcome poverty, God wanted us to not just give them food(fish), but more so teach them how to fish, how to be self sufficient and be able to stand on their own and in time, be able to help others too.

This gave birth to this project which is the second phase of the Love Without Boundaries Project.. This is concentrated on helping the people of Mamacao who was the recipient of the water project, 12 families now have access to clean water, have an additional means of income.

OBJECTIVE:

The main objective of the project is to provide selected families in Mamacao Davao Del Norte City an additional income through hog raising/breeding in their respective backyards. This could contribute to their monthly income thereby improving their living condition.

Pig Raising and Sow Breeding Livelihood Project for Mamacao

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Why did we choose Pig or Hog raising or sow breeding.

Pigs grow fast. They grow from about three pounds at birth to market weight (225 pounds) in about 6 months. It takes some 10 months from the time the sow conceives until her pigs reach market weight.

They can be sold alive at a livestock market or perhaps processed into pork for home use at a local livestock slaughtering facility. The most important products from hogs are hams, roasts or lechon, chops, bacon, and sausage.

They can also be raised for breeding to produce piglets which can be then sold.

Raising pigs is a very popular enterprise in the Philippines because there is a proliferation of backyard producers which dominate the swine industry and a healthy viable commercial sector.

Despite the crises facing the swine industry (such as the spread of foot-and-mouth disease), still many people are venturing in this enterprise.

The congregations livelihood program coordinator headed by Pastor Girlie Antipala has been actively gathering information about the process of raising pigs, the costs involved, and they were able to coordinate with a local branch of the government involved in teaching people livelihood programs.

They have coordinated with Tesda, (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) serves as the Philippines' Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) authority. As a government agency, TESDA is tasked to both manage and supervise the Philippines' Technical Education and Skills Development (TESD). Its goals are to develop the Filipino workforce with "world-class competence and positive work values" and to provide quality technical-educational and skills development through its direction, policies, and programs.

TESDA gives seminars to educate and equip people with skills and involves in livelihood programs.

A representative of Tesda conducted a seminar on pig raising where the people were taught how to feed, care, and maintain the pigs. They also assisted in sourcing the pigs, teaching the congregation on choosing the right kind of pigs.

Much prayer and preparation has been put into this project and we pray for God's hands be upon the people who will be caring for the pig, we pray for the success and multiplication of this project.

Plan:

1. We aim to obtain two Mature Pigs that are ready to breed.

2. They will be prepared for mating for 2 months by giving them vitamins, proper feeds to ensure they are healthy to produce.

3. Once they are determined to be ready, they will then be exposed to a Boar.

Costs: Php59,150.00 (HKD8,921.00 or USD1,160.00)

Total costs of two Mature female Pigs, maintenance including food, vitamins and other needed supplements and the costs of the Boar.
