Little Akira fights for survival

Hi, my name is Tan Siew Hui. I'm a Malaysian government servant. I followed my husband (Alex Tang Chee Liat) to Tokyo, Japan for a conference on 29th Sep 2017. I was 27 weeks 4 days pregnant that moment and my estimated delivery date was 27th Dec 2017.

Unfortunately, I developed premature/preterm contraction on 1st Oct 2017 and delivered a preterm baby girl (27 weeks 6 days) with a birth weight of a mere 1.02kg. As she was preterm/premature, she required Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admission and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask ventilation.

As she is born in JAPAN near mid autumn, we named her Akira which carry the meaning of an autumn child.

Akira is currently 30 weeks (corrected gestational age). She still requires NICU care and CPAP mask ventilation. The Neonatologists/Paediatricians estimated the total length of stay in NICU to be around 2 and a half months (until she is around 38 weeks of corrected age).

As we are consider a foreigner in Tokyo, Japan the medical costs is extremely high. The estimated total medical expenses for Akira is approximately ¥25 millions (around USD $225'000 or Ringgit Malaysia RM950000). This is way beyond our ability to afford. We did buy travel insurance, sadly, travel insurance doesn't cover childbirth.
