Lima Perú

Hi guys, I’m Skyla Hovik! Hopefully soon to be Melina Burdick. I have started this campaign to raise money for my missionary/ volunteer trip to Lima Peru, for a time period of 24 weeks (5.2 months). I’m hoping April 20th - October 5th. In Lima Peru, there are tons of people and places in need of volunteers. I personally want to help with the child care, teaching english, community support programs and construction and renovation. Child care in Lima are often underfunded and volunteers coming in to help with the children are very benifitial to them. My tasks with volunteering for child care would include play time, supervising, preparing materials, feeding , bathing, bathroom breaks, organizing activites and any other things that may arise. The teaching english program in Lima helps local Peruvians that want to learn english; with volunteers like myself that speak fluent english we can help them enhance their skills and ability to communicate universally. The community Support program in Lima allows volunteers to assist in multiple places that need the help. For example I would be helping in elderly care homes, soup kitchens, childcare centers, and in the schools teaching english. The construction and renovation program offers me and other volunteers the chance to see immediate impact in the community, the focus is on homes and unpriviled families in Peru. The families in Pachacutec libe in makeshift homes and they are financially unable to complete repairs. Many of the community buildings in Lima need help with painting, gardening, and basic repair work. I believe I can help the people of peru with my services. A lot of these kids live in orphanges and me being a foster kid myself I believe I can help show these children that there is a way and even in bad situations you can make the best of it. And I could also be there to just talk with them and relate to them. I also believe this hands on daily experience will benifit me greatly. I have never been a very confident or social person and I think that the different culture and just being there will help me come out of my shell and experience more of the world. It is also going to be hands on learning/ education trip. I will be learning spanish and embrassing another culture along with meeting new people and learning the history behind peru. I will also be learning more time management, navigation, better communication, and teamwork skills. It will be a very eye-opening slef-growth experience. I will be able to see and think outside of where I come from. This mission trip will also be very benifitial to my future as the volunteer hours can count toward scholarships and can be an amazing thing to talk about in college interviews and on resumes. I want to help change the world we live in and this is a way I can help change it little by little. I am very passioniate about helping the people and children in need in Lima Peru.
