Lily’s Educational Trip 2013

Hi I'm Lily and I'm 11 yrs old. I was chosen along with 24 other kids in my school district to take part in an educational trip to Hawaii for 10 days.  The selection process included an essay and also my very first interview.  Now that I have done all the work to be chosen my parents have to do the hard part...come up with $3,500.00 to send me on the trip.  I am helping around the house to earn extra allowance and I have also started babysitting to help with the cost.

This trip is a scientific based trip that will be very eduactional and also full of a lot of fun. We will be backpacking through the Volcano National Park backcountry, spending a night in the High Altitude observatory on Kona, visiting the Keck telescope center, we will traverse the Kilauea Iki Crater, tour the Jagger museum, we will get to tour Pearl Harbour and the USS Missouri.  Our Trip ends with a cultural and arts festival at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau where we get to experience what Polynesian cutlure was like before the Europeans came.

I'm nervous and excited for this trip.  It will be my first time away form home without any family around.  I am usually shy and I will have to break out of my comfort zone for this experience.  I feel like this will be great for me in so many ways.  I have already met so many new people and I am learning already to be more responsible.
