Hi, everyone!
I've received an amazing opportunity to travel to Siem Reap, Cambodia to volunteer with the non-profit organization, EDventure International, for 3 weeks in May of 2014.
Cambodia was divided by civil wars, and poverty as a result of the genocide from the reign of the Khmer Rouge government. All educated people were either made to work as farm laborers, or killed. This has left Cambodia in a state of poverty with a large number of orphans, and uneducated civilians who lack the resources needed to improve their living conditions. Nonetheless, their people remain strong, resilient and eager to move forward.
Through EDventure International, I will participate in projects to meet their basic needs. This includes:
- Working at a local orphanage
- Educational Needs: working at local schools
- Teaching English to children and teachers
- Preparing lesson plans with teachers
- Health and Sanitation Needs
- Bio-Sand Filters: filter water through sand and gravel
- Sort sand, sift gravel, pour cement moulds, and paint the filters
- Deliver water filters to families within the local community
- Agricultural and Infrastructure Needs
- Mushroom growing project
- Educate and empower farmers to grow cash crops that they can sell at the market
- Tend to plants, vegetable, and other ‘cash’ crops
- Mushroom growing project
- Bio-Sand Filters: filter water through sand and gravel
I want to join this project so I can increase my awareness of global issues, develop leadership abilities, and most of all, make a difference in the lives of others. I have been treated at The Hospital for Sick Children from the age of 12 for various health problems and have received so much help from their incredible staff. Since then it has been a dream of mine to do the same for others and alleviate their physical or emotional pain. I want to make a positive change and spread this interest of mine and meet others who are equally or more passionate. Please support my dream and help me in taking this first step to aid those in need.
I am looking to raise $3,100 for the program cost and about $1,400 for my flight. Any and all help you can provide to help fund my trip would be appreciated.
Thank you so much for reading this and supporting me and my dream. Also, remember that you will be making a huge impact in Cambodian communities!
