Campaign Story
In Uganda only 10% of people with mental illness receive adequate treatment. In remote areas there are no facilities at all. In this project we will deliver lifestyle counseling to people with HIV who are very weak and who have a co-morbid mental disorder in remote areas. Our previous research demonstrated that such counselling is effective. It reduces the mental health burden and suicide rates drop to 0%. In this project 3 trained lay workers will provide counselling to 15 patients each (45 in total). Patients will be followed for one year. The aim is to reconnect the patients to their families and communities so they can become active and contributing members in their families and communities again. This way we also want to tackle the stigma of HIV and mental disorders. The campaign will be called: OBUMU (Luganda for 'connecting'. Kyambogo University will evaluate the efficacy of this low-cost model in collaboration with the KU Leuven, Belgium. We hope to convince the ministry of health in Uganda but also in other low income countries, in particular in Sub-Sahara Africa to invest in these low-cost lifestyle interventions and via this way to improve the quality of life of many vulnerable people.
