27 April 2019 Cyclone Kenneth struck northern Mozambique. It was the strongest cyclone ever recorded in the region. It flattened villages, destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, crops - everything in its path. 370 000 people were affected, many losing everything they owned.
As devastating as an event like this is, the aftermath is where the true crisis lies. Loss of shelter, food insecurity, and the burden of diseases like malaria, diarrhea (especially Cholera) etc are the order of the day. With many clinics being totally destroyed and deserted, large population groups even now have no access to healthcare.
AdventistHelp is partnering with ADRA Mozambique in an emergency response here in this vulnerable region. We are focusing on running mobile primary clinics treating infectious diseases like malaria and diarrhea in rural areas around the city of Pemba that were severely affected, as well as further north. At AdventistHelp our team are all volunteers and our processes are self funded. Though we are a small organization, thanks to your support we have been able to reach thousands of people in crisis areas like Greece, Iraq, Uganda and now Mozambique.
Our request is simple. We need funds for medicines. We have identified a local supplier that has the lowest rates for pharmaceuticals utilizing generics. We are focusing on malaria medicines, antibiotics, diarrhea medicines, and analgesics.
- 6 US dollars diagnoses and fully treats a woman with malaria
- 3 US Dollars is a course of antibiotics for a child with pneumonia
- 1 US Dollar is enough to orally treat a case of diarrhea.
We’re starting in the villages around the towns of Chiure and Mecufe - both regions badly affected and currently battling a cholera outbreak. Need is enormous.
