Friday, 13th (May 2022) certainly lived up to its ominous reputation. Getting home from work, my 4yo rescue Ridgeback cross got the zoomies, in true tradition of my arrival, although this time it wasn’t a happy ending.

Kai suddenly stumbled and collapsed over his feet. He immediately bounced back up again but in a matter of hours suffered paresis (partial paralysis), and couldn’t stand, let alone walk.

After numerous gut-wrenching and traumatic visits to 3 different vets along with countless drugs, neurological tests, T4/thyroid tests, blood tests, spinal fluid tests and the devastating option of euthanasia, it was discovered that my boy, Kai had, had a stroke brought on by a rare degenerative nerve disease, called Polyradiculoneuritis. (Acute polyradiculoneuritis is an inflammation that develops suddenly when the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. It results in generalized weakness and paralysis.)

To date, my 50kg active, happy boy, has spent 10 excoriating days in a baby cot in ICU at 2 animal vet hospitals.

There is not much known about this awful disease, but what is known is dogs (and cats) can recover 100% through constant physiotherapy, motion rehabilitation and endless TLC.

I’ve been assured he will walk again.
Kai and I have the determination and I’ve got an abundance of TLC, but I’ve also got the heavy weight of massive vet bills adding up to tens of thousands of Rands, to clear.

I ask for you, in these trying times to give back the Life of Kai and help us both get back on our feet. Debt free. Pain free. Trauma free.

We thank you in advance, with endless sloppy kisses and are paws-itive we will get through this, one day at a time.

Thank you,

Kai’s Mom

Sunday, 12 June 2022: We sit and watch Kai in absolute amazement. How he has progressed is nothing short of a miracle. Just when we thought the ray of hope started to dim, Kai showed us his true determination, strong-will and untiring effort - Kai has finally found the strength

“Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.” – Bernice Johnson Reagon Today, 13th June 2022 marks one month since Kai had his fall. A minor incident that turned into a significant ordeal. We are still befuddled as to what causes. . . . .

Kai is managing to sit, albeit for a very short period, (max 2min) and then he falls over, but he is making progress. I know Kai has the will and strength to keep going. Staying positive for him.

A Dog "Nose"...

The week that was… This week has been one to draw on physical and mental toughness yet again. Seeing my boy suffer a horrible bladder infection, passing blood clots, and enduring the utter frustration of not being able to get up on his own, is the fuel that keeps me. . . . .

Through trying times, we learn humility. We learn the depth of our inner (and outer) strength, perseverance, and resilience. We are into our 3rd week of Kai's recovery and during this process I have learnt so much, not only about the determination and courage of my brave boy, but how difficult. . . . .

Kai Gets Electro-Acupunture

Update posted by Belinda Cave at 09:22 am

Friday, 27th May 2022Kai got his first full holistic assessment since leaving Onderstepoort Vet Hospital at Holistic Rehab. After a thorough physical examination Kai underwent EA (Electro-Acupuncture). Sounds shocking! BUT this is a modern take of traditional acupuncture. EA is widely used for neurological conditions which incorporates electricity. During treatment. . . . .

Tuesday, 21st May 2022, Collected Kai from Onderstepoort Vet Hospital so he could recover from home and be in his own environment. At this stage there has been no regression, but unfortunately no progression. Kai is stable, has full control of his bladder, but still no mobility in his limbs.
