Any money raised above my $800 goal will go to support the entire team's fundraising efforts (to the tune of $30,000!)! And of course, all donations of $20 or more made here before January 4th will be entered into the $50 gift card raffle! So thank you again for all the support and Happy Holidays!!! -Alex
As many of you know, in under 2 weeks I'm headed to rural Liberia with a team of general surgeons and OBGYN surgeons to provide much needed medical and surgical services to the population served by Phebe Hospital, a few hours east of Monrovia, the nation's capital (http://tinyurl.com/
PhebeHospitalMap). Liberia, which is recovering from gruesome civil war that ended a decade ago, remains one of the poorest countries in the world with a healthcare system that ranges from dilapidated to non-existent. Our January 2014 Mission (Liberia Project Hope 2014) is part of an ongoing partnership to train local physicians and provide high quality care to the community. Over 2.5 weeks, we will perform over 50 surgeries, and will screen and treat hundreds of patients. As a medical student joining the mission, its a tremendous opportunity for me to do service work, as well as to see first hand how physicians can strive to build up health systems and provide a better standard of care around the globe.
I have personally spent countless hours over the past 4 months preparing for this trip: planning logistics, training, fundraising, collecting and packing supplies, etc. Our team is now in its final fundraising push, and every team member--every student, surgeon, and aneasthesiologist--has been tasked with raising just a little bit more through the holidays to make this project a success. We can do a lot of good work with few supplies--its amazing actually--but we still need essentials like surgical gloves and instruments, medications, IV lines, catheters, and sutures so we can provide the standard of care that any and every human being deserves--whether in the eastern United States or along the west coast of Africa.
Every bit counts - $5, $50, or $500 - please consider helping support this project by helping me reach my fundraising goal.
Finally, as an incentive - I'm raffling off a $50 Amazon.com gift card. Any supportor who donates $20 or more will be entered for a chance to win! And, with every additional $20 donation, you can earn an extra entree into the raffle! So, donate $60 and you'll get 3 chances to win. Winner to be announed at the end of January!
Thank you so much for your support. I hope you are all well and wish you a very happy holiday season and new year!
All the best,
