Liberia has a very long history of consuming bushmeat: from antelopes to monkeys, from pangolins to birds and reptiles, everything ends up on a plate...
The Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary is the first and only wildlife rescue center for different animal species in Liberia. Founded in 2017, we are a relatively new sanctuary.
It was established as an answer to the new wildlife law that passed in November 2016. This law states that it is now illegal to catch, kill, eat and sell endangered wildlife in Liberia. With authorities ready to take action, a place was needed to take the confiscated animals to.
And the sanctuary was there just in time! So far, 530 animals came in and over 270 have been released back into the wild!
Most animals that come in are young animals, some still in need of milk. Adults are usually killed for consumption (bushmeat) and the babies are sold to be kept as pets, living a miserable life on a chain, a short rope or in a tiny cage...
Rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals is very expensive: food for the animals, fixing and building enclosures and salaries for animal caretakers are taking a big bite out of our budget. The sanctuary now costs about $US2500 a month...
Therefore, we need YOUR help! Any donation, big or small, will DIRECTLY benefit the animals in their rehabilitation!
So, on behalf of Liberia's wildlife: THANK YOU!
