Hi there, my name is Ignas Dambrauskas and I am an 18-year-old Lithuanian tenor entering conservatoire training for the first time ever in September 2024. Your support would help me to excel at opera and classical music singing and would change the trajectory of my life.

I come from a single parent family, and my mother raises us, 4 children, alone. She will try to contribute as much as possible, but given the current family situation, I will be responsible for covering most of the costs myself by finding external funding, and a student job.

I feel immensely fortunate for passing a very competitive audition (hundreds of applicants to study from all over the world and only around 10% accepted) and being offered a place to study on the Undergraduate’s course in Vocal Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. It is one of the top ten performing arts institutions in the world (QS World University Rankings 2023), the number one UK higher education institution for Music (Guardian University Guide 2024) and number one UK conservatoire for Arts, Drama and Music (Complete University Guide 2024).

After my studies, I would like to sing in the Royal Opera House in London, and perform in big classical music productions in the UK and abroad. At the same time promoting my beautiful country Lithuania.

To be able to achieve all this, my extreme self-motivation and talents are far from enough. I am an overseas (international) student. Therefore, the cost of the same vocal studies for me is 3 times higher as compared to the UK students on the same course - £25,720. Aside from that, I have estimated that the additional health insurance costs £3,492, student house rent (a dormitory room) - £9,700 per year, the maintenance (living costs) could be up to £10,000 per year, just covering other basic needs.

Based on my audition results, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama has offered me a very generous financial award towards the first year tuition fees - £7,000. However, the remaining fees are still very high.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my story and for sending your financial contributions to support my studies.

I discovered my passion for singing when I was 5 years old. I had severe asthma and my mother was searching for all possible ways to combat it. Surprisingly, singing was one of the best ways to strengthen broncos and lungs. Therefore, my mother signed me up for an audition at the Lithuanian National Boys and Youth choir ‘Ąžuoliukas’, which is the best choir in Lithuania and possibly in the Baltic states. The audition panel said I passed the audition easily and with great success. I sang there for nine subsequent years, taking part in numerous choir competitions and winning prizes in Lithuania and abroad. Additionally, I sang in a separate exclusive choir group, made of the best ‘Ąžuoliukas singers. This group was created specifically for the chamber music and international competitions. Furthermore, to develop my musicianship, I attended multiple weekly lessons of music theory and history, saxophone, recorder, piano, and conducting. ‘Ąžuoliukas’ became my second home, a place where I felt I belonged and where my love for classical music was initially born. Throughout the years, apart from concerts in hundreds of churches, I participated in Baltic Song festivals, various concerts at the Lithuanian National Radio and Television, Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet theatre, Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society. On an international stage, I was fortunate enough to participate in choir competitions in Haijnowka, Bialystok, Międzyzdroje and Minsk, where ‘Ąžuoliukas’ won multiple gold and 1st place diplomas.

In 2019, my family and I moved to Brussels (Belgium). It was a sad year for musicians and audiences because of the pandemics. During that year, I continued my singing lessons online. My treble voice completely broke due to vocal mutation as well. It was time for a new musical chapter in my life. Therefore, in September 2020 I successfully auditioned and joined the Brussels Opera’s ‘La Monnaie’ Children and Youth choir as a tenor now. With this new choir, alongside with concerts at churches, I was incredibly fortunate to gain new performance experiences, such as singing for the King Philippe of Belgium for his reign 10th anniversary and take part in my first contemporary opera production ,,Solar, Icarus burning” by Howard Moody.

I plan to get European baccalaureate diploma in July. All my grades at school are very good and I could choose to study any profession. Still, singing is an inseparable part of my life. Classical music allows me to express myself, to meet many new people, to perform in various places and to gain precious new experiences. When I decided to pursue the soloist career, I started listening to the best tenors of all time (L. Pavarotti, F. Corelli, P. Domingo, E. Caruso, G. Di Stefano…) and I could not help but admire their grand presence on stage, their rich voices, full of natural and accurate phrasing, altogether with the perfect vocal and respiratory technique. Their excellent singing would resonate to each individual listener, even making them cry and have goosebumps.

I think this is what every great singer needs to strive for. I hope to achieve all of the previously mentioned characteristics of those incredible singers with the professional help from one of the best conservatoire teachers and vocal education. It will grant me much needed advice on how to develop my voice and singing technique, and my career overall, offering numerous opportunities to perform and expand my social presence. I also hope to start taking part in singing competitions, to meet many new people from around the globe, so that I could learn, collaborate, make personal and professional connections, a vital thing that I believe is so crucial in this industry. With this kind of excellent training and environment for musical growth, I hope that when the time comes, I will have an opportunity to perform on a big stage and share my passion for singing with the audience, making them feel certain emotions by hearing me.

With four years of forthcoming studies to fund, I would be enormously grateful for any financial support you would be able to provide. Without external help, I will not be able to follow my dream and study at all at such an excellent institution like the Guildhall. Having dedicated so much of my time and energy over the years to prepare myself for music college, I am absolutely determined to make the most of the opportunity I have now been given. I would hugely appreciate your financial support, and I feel confident that I will use it well!

Creating this was not easy for me, I know that there are people who are much more in need than myself but if anyone wants to be generous and donate towards my education, I thank you. Everything helps and I will be forever grateful.

Thank you for reading and hearing my story.
