Jeff Joseph is 14 years old. He lives in a tented camp in a Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Jeff desperately wants to go to school. But he can't, because quite simply his mother and his father are too poor to send him or any of their children to school.
Jeff’s situation is not unusual in Haiti, where 80% to 90% of all schools are private and only about 20% of all eligible secondary school students are in school. In 2011, Jeff and other young Haitians participated in a radio training workshop. Jeff’s radio piece was about children’s rights, specifically the right to education. During the training, Jeff asked if we could help him exercise his right to education by helping him go to school.
We think that’s doable. We want to help send Jeff to school.
This funding for Jeff's schooling will be a scholarship that recognizes his work during the radio training. In other words, this is not a hand out. He earned this.
Sending Jeff to school for one year will cost $500. This includes tuition, books, uniform, and minor expenses such as exams. We hope to raise $2,500, enough to send Jeff to school for five years and allow him to graduate from high school. The scholarship will be paid directly to the school, and managed by us. If we raise more funds than are needed for one year, they will be used to fund the years following. But only if Jeff does well in school and only if we have the support of caring people like you.
Please contribute if you’re interested and able. Simply click the green tab to the right and follow the instructions.
We’ll keep you up to date on how Jeff is doing, including sending you photos and a personal note of thanks from him.
You have our thanks as well.
