Linards LAPINS is 14 (fourteen) years old teenager from Latvia, who is attending the 7th class at the boarding school for children with movement disorders in Jelgava, Latvia. Since the birth he was diagnosed - infantile cerebral palsy and spastic tetraparesis, what means that all limbs, both arms and legs, are affected by brain damage and he has abnormally increased muscle tone. That means Linards has serious movement disorders and at age of five Linards was able to move only by crawling.
Thanks to the money donated by responsive people in Latvia, in 2008 at the age of seven Linards underwent the muscle extension surgery in orthopedic clinic in Munich in Germany. In result of the successful surgery in Munich, he could start attending the boarding school in Latvia.
Linards educational performance is good, he is erudite, purposeful and friendly. He willingly participates in different school activities - in sports competitions for people with disabilities, swimming, etc. He is very interested in sports, geography and especially in informatics. Linards aims to become a programmer one day in future - a man who will be able to provide livelihood by himself and build an independent everyday life.
After performed surgery and accurate recovery period provided by the orthopedic specialists from clinic in Munich and regular physiotherapy courses in post-surgery period, in the result of received support Linards began to walk by himself! This means that achieved the first major step in the boy's growth and independence!
No less important than the surgery itself is to receive a high-quality and adequate post-surgery care. It’s extremely important for Linards to ensure the correct extended muscle recovery and strengthening with regular physiotherapy procedures, resulting in a greater chance of obtaining normal movements.
As now Linards is rapidly growing the leg muscle status obviously deteriorates, but the leg muscles do not develop adequately due to his disease. For this reason he remains more and more difficult to move independently without use of wheelchair. The problems are in feet, joints, as well as knee deformation on the inside occurs.
The German doctor - orthopedist inspected Linards and advised for further medical treatment and rehabilitation process. In order to ensure the ability to walk Linards was re-appointed for the extension of the leg muscle surgery in the orthopedic clinic in Munich in Germany. Unfortunately, there are no available technical facilities for of performance of such surgery in Latvia.
The required amount for the extension of the leg muscle surgery in the orthopedic clinic in Munich, Germany and post-surgery recovery is 25 475,00 EUR.
