Let’s help Tita Betty!!

Most of us remember Tita Betty as our caring mother figure when aboard their Diaz School Bus in OBMC who made sure we get to and from school safely, and who also feeds us with the most delicious Bicol home-cooked meals! Now it is time that we show some love back!!

Last October 2016, Tita Betty Diaz was diagnosed to have Progressive Muscle Atrophy, a genetic neuromuscular disorder, which affects groups of muscles in the body causing progressive loss of muscle control, muscle movement, and increasing muscular weakness. In her case, it started with generalized weakness, then attacked the groups of muscles responsible for walking and then progressed to the muscles for breathing which eventually led to her unable to walk and having a tracheostomy tube (tube inserted through a hole made in the neck and windpipe leading supply of oxygen into the airway) and being connected to and dependent on a mechanical ventilator as she could not breathe on her own. She stayed in the ICU of The Medical City for 4 long months before she was weaned off the mechanical ventilator as she learned to breathe on her own again before being allowed to go home.

Recently, her breathing muscles have again started to weaken which led to lack of oxygen, a build up of carbon dioxide in the body, and a predisposition to lung infections. She is now again confined in the ICU of St. Luke's Medical Center with Pneumonia, also attached to a mechanical ventilator for breathing support.

Update (11/12): Tita Betty was moved from ICU to regular room however still with assistance of a mechanical ventilator. Thank you for your support and prayers!

Tita Betty has been in and out of the hospital over the past year with the support and care of her husband and 3 children, Christopher, Christian, and Charles. Despite them doing the best to provide, this has put a financial strain on the family and we want to help in every way we can!!
