Let’s help the kids of Cannan Orphanage!

Hi Everybody,

My name is Andrea and I turned 27 years old last March. I was born and raised in a town, called Vittoria, in Sicily, but I moved to England after my nursing graduation. During the past year, I had the chance to volunteer with a non-profit organization in Calais, which provided support and assistance to refugees from crisis zones. I quite enjoyed my time as volunteer and I started looking for some volunteering projects around the world. My zest for kids brought me to Kenya, to be precise at the Cannan Orphanage in Mombasa.

The orphanage is run by Risper Ayub, aka “Big Mama”, the woman who decided to establish a new “home” for abandoned kids with the help of her husband and other friends. Currently, there are 38 kids between 1-17 years old, some of them have the possibility to go to school, but the remaining part of younger kids are taught by volunteer teachers who are not always present there. They live miserably in poor conditions and don’t have enough funds to buy drinkable water every-day.

Water here is really a big issue!

During the raining season, the playing field gets flooded regularly and it becomes a huge swamp due to a lack of a water supply and a sewer system. Therefore, kids get sick easily and quite often they don’t go to the hospital as they get charged for the service, and the use of home remedies is not enough to heal them!

We have been always promoting the welfare of children in this world and see a terrible situation like that is really heart breaking.

Since 2011 Mama’s family has been living in tremendous conditions and now they are at risk to be evicted from the orphanage as they are not able to afford the rent. Moreover, the government doesn’t support them at all. The only help that they receive is from mostly volunteers and friends.

As volunteer, I’m asking for some help for these kids, they are our future and we need to protect and safeguard them, they deserve a prosperous life like every kid in this planet! Big Mama and her family have a dream. Their dream is to have their own land where they can dwell and raise children in an efficient way. In order to accomplish this dream, they need a little help from all of you!
