Praise came early 2018 to University of Kwazulu Natal to study engineering which has always been his passion, though he was an international student from Nigeria but didn't let the cost of expense blur his passion for education. He was admitted into the prestigious school hoping to finish on record time. As of many cases in UKZN exclusion, as been mainly based on failure to meet the academic requirements but fortunately Praise is a top-notch student at the school, he got few certificates of merit from the school and was also nominated as a golden key member and the list of his achievements goes on and on. As of the case of his entry in 2018 he wasn't aware of the whole school rules and based on his admission letter he was told to go to the finance department to get his statement of fees, which based on that, he would be able to estimate how much he is to be paying every year. Would I stay fortunately or unfortunately for him, he was charged with a fee (approximately 5000 USD) lower than the exact amount he was meant to pay(which he later got to know) and him not being aware of that told his parents about the fees, though the parents were struggling to pay it they were ever ready to go through loans to keep paying until he finishes his degree.
Praise finished his first year successfully(2018), though he was still owning but managed to make a plan payment to roll over the debt to his second year and pay them but suddenly in his mid-second year(may 2019) an additional fee called international tuition was added to his account (approximately 13720 USD ), this was strange and heart-breaking, upon how would he be able to pay this amount.
Now Praise finished his second year being worried about the accumulated fees and how he was going to register for his third year.
Along the way his mum came to South africa to help plead about the fees added to his account, though it was in prospectus , but should be given lienency in paying it because it was not part of the budget, and she asked what must she do so that he would be allowed to register for his 3rd year. she was told that he should complete his first year outstanding fees(approximately 1,500 USD) then he would be allowed to register.
The third year came 2020, his parents managed to secure loans, paid his outstanding debts hoping that after that he would be able to register for his 3rd year and plan payments would be made on how he would be paying his fees and also continue searching for bursaries and seeking for help from the school.
He went to the finance department so he could be allowed to register but he was told he needs to pay at least 50% of his outstanding debts of his 2nd year and 50% of his upfront fees for the new year before he can be allowed to register. This was almost impossible to raise. His outstanding debt had already risen up to 13,785 USD because of the monthly interest added to his fees and he was meant to pay half of it.
In order to complete the study, a total amount of 50,000 USD has to be raised.
I would like to plead for your assistance not to let Praise drop out of the university, he is a bright kid. Though registration has closed and lectures have started but late registration would be allowed by the school.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for any donation we receive.
