Let’s help Andreea in her fight with Leukemia

Her name is Andreea and she is 12 years old. She was waiting for the summer holiday when a pain in her knee brought her to a place with a strange name: Marie Curie. She is too young to understand what this T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL-proT) is doing to her summer holiday affecting her central nervous system, with a leukemized lymphoma in her lungs. So her mom made up a story and told her that some children, that is the bravest of them all, get lost the same way as Alice in Wonderland.

Her mom, who, for the last two months, has followed her down the rabbit hole, tells her that all those bottles from which different liquids drop will shrink her 11-centimeter tumor, the same way Alice got shrunk after drinking that potion. Andreea only knows that the word “tumor” makes her mom cry a lot. In her mom’s story, leukemia is a kind of evil and aggressive Queen of Hearts and the doctors have to beat her at cricket.

Andreea believes that, if she is a good girl, as good as she can be, and bears all that pain that she doesn’t understand, she will get a wonder-drug that will cure her. She will then be able to go back home, to be with her dolls. Only she hasn’t met The March Hare and The Mad Hatter yet. In order for her to be able to return to her childhood, she must first get lost in another place for a while, in another hospital: Bambino Gesu in Rome, Italy. There the evil Queen of Hearts can be beaten.

Andreea suffers from an aggressive form of leukemia and her chemotherapy was interrupted because she developed pneumonia caused by the golden staph found in the hospital. Andreea has undergone three lung surgeries and her condition does not allow her to wait for the Romanian medical system to come up with a better story for her. The hospital does not have the necessary medication but has plenty of staphylococci and bacteria. Her parents found and bought the drugs for the first round of chemo from the other end of the globe.

Andreea was a little girl with curly, waist-long hair. You don’t have to see before- and after-chemo photos, you only have to picture her in your mind’s eye. The thought that this could happen to your son or daughter, your nephew or nice, or any other innocent child would certainly make you shudder.

Andreea must go to Italy, to Bambino Gesu hospital, and she needs the help of all of us. She’s asking for help, from the abyss of her illness or from the Wonderland beyond the rabbit’s hole. On her behalf, we ask you to help her. If we all give a hand, we’ll reach down to where she is and we’ll help her wake up from this unfair nightmare with sick children surrounded by sad and tired parents. We’ll make the magic that Andreea needs!
