Let’s Do This For Doods

Update posted by Manolo Fetalvero On Jan 06, 2020

The 2nd round of radiotherapy sessions for Doods was completed last 27th Dec. It was relatively uneventful. And after a couple of days of observation, the doctors agreed that she's fit enough to be discharged and start her rehab from home.

So, last Monday, 30th Dec, Doods came home.

It was not easy adjusting to new routines for her (and all of us), a bit uncomfortable at times, and at other, painful. But she took it at her stride. She's now more confident in walking with her walking frame. And she's taking longer and longer periods of sitting rather than lying down on the bed.

Finally, the moment she's been waiting for, she attended the Mass yesterday at our Parish, Our Lady Star of the Sea. This was her first Mass after she's been hospitalized last October.

Please continue to pray for her full recovery.

God bless us all!

Doods and I wanted to say THANK YOU for your support. We just can't imagine what would it be like without your constant prayers, encouragement and financial support.

Two weeks ago, after much deliberation, we decided that Doods is strong enough to go through the right thigh bone strengthening procedure. So, she had it on the 12th. It went well and surprisingly, Doods had very little discomfort afterwards. The only thing that really changed from her usual routine was not to move the right leg.

But that also didn't last long. On the 14th, her doctor gave the "go" signal for her physiotherapist to start her on light exercises. And that made a big difference.

Her appetite has improved together with her energy. She requested for chicken adobo & steamed rice on the 18th and managed a piece for her lunch and another piece for dinner. Her dietician also changed her "milk" to another brand that she can start drinking normally, not through the NGT tube.

And yesterday, she received an early Christmas present... they removed her NGT tube. And her physiotherapist also started her to walk, a few steps around the room. Yay!!!

Last Friday, 20th, she also started her 2nd round of radiotherapy, this time concentrated on her hips and legs. This round will complete by this Friday, 27th. This is to address the cancer damage on her right thigh bone and also some spots on her left hip bone. Hopefully, with this round, she would be able to fully use both her legs.

The only downside, last Saturday (21st), the doctors decided to move her to an isolation unit due to a bacterial infection. She's still under observation. We were hoping she would be given a "home pass" to celebrate the Christmas. However, with this infection...

Please continue to pray for her full recovery and to fight off this and future infections.

Blessed Christmas to you and your family!

Doods has moved on from blended food to a softened diet (e.g. minced meat and vegetables), but her main source of nutrients is still via the ngt-fed milk.

She has lost some hair because of the chemo treatments so they decided to shave it all off. Also, they had a discussion with the orthopaedic surgeon with regards to her right thigh bone strengthening procedure, which they have scheduled for Wednesday next week.

She’s on her path for recovery. Let’s all pray for Dood’s continuous healing.

Last Friday, 22nd Nov, the Fetalveros consulted with another orthopedic surgeon regarding the recommendation from SGH to operate on Doods' right thigh. They explained to him the biopsy results and the targeted therapy she's on now, the radiotherapy sessions she completed and its effect, and her overall condition, etc.

The doctor explained that this type of operation, to strengthen the thigh bone, will be followed by another round of radiotherapy sessions. The operation will not be able to fully remove the cancer cells in the bone. But it is necessary because the cancer cells have already damaged the thigh bone and it will be prone to fracture or it might even break in the future.

So, his recommendation is to control first the spread of the cancer cells via radiotherapy, not operation. As Doods' health improves further, re-assess her situation and decide then.

Boyfet discussed this with the SGH doctors yesterday and told them that he agrees with the recommendation of doing radiotherapy first and let Doods' health improve further. Meanwhile, put her through light exercises to slowly tone her muscles.

A few more milestones...

The dietitian increased her milk intake through the NGT tube to 300ml (she started with 80 ml and could not even keep it down then). They are very happy that she's able to take it.

Yesterday, 25th Nov, her speech therapist visited her and coached her to swallow some thickened water as well as biscuit soaked in water. She was able to do it! YEY! So, the therapist instructed her to start practicing this every mealtime. She said it will take some time before she can actually eat normally.

Her hair became very dry, wiry and started to fall off a couple of days ago. One of the nurses taking care of her helped to cut them short. She started wearing a bonnet yesterday.

That’s all for now. Let us thank the Lord for these good news, and pray for Doods’ continued healing.

Doods has been in the hospital for 4 weeks now. She has been transferred from Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) to Singapore General Hospital, where the National Cancer Center of Singapore (NCCS) is located, last Nov 3.

She has completed her radiotherapy treatment last Thursday, 14th Nov. The treatment helped a lot in controlling the growth of the tumors on her spine and brain. After the 2nd session, her neck & shoulder pain were gone. And after her 3rd session, her back pain also disappeared. From that point onward, she was pain-free.

The other symptoms that the radiotherapy tried to address and control are the tumors in her brain that caused her face to droop and made it difficult for her to swallow.

Two days after the radiotherapy sessions were completed, her face went back to normal. But the swallowing problem persisted such that on 9th Nov she can't swallow anything, even water. So on 11th Nov she was fitted with a naso-gastric tube (NGT) to feed her the nutrients she needs. She was very weak at this point, sleeping most of the time.

They started her with only 60ml of Ensure. She was given this 6 times on that day. The following day, it was increased to 90ml, then 110ml, 150ml after that, then 200ml and finally 250ml.

It had it's immediate effect, her strength started to come back. But she's still adjusting to it. They had to change her "milk" to Jevity yesterday, 18th Nov, because she's passing motion an hour or two after taking Ensure. She's still under observation with the new milk.

We received the Biopsy results last Friday, 15th Nov. It confirmed what we were dreading, she's got stage 4 lung cancer. The doctor had started her immediately with targeted therapy, oral medication.

Being at NCCS, she now has a team of specialists treating her. They are recommending to strengthen her right thigh bone, which has been damaged by the cancer, by inserting a metal rod into it. The Fetalveros are looking into getting a second opinion for this surgery.

Doods is in high spirits. Makulit na, she keeps asking when she can go home. Maybe because she can’t wait to go shopping? Mayabang na rin kasi she can sit in a chair without back pain!

The nurses have taught the family how to do the feeding in preparation for her return home. Meantime, please continue praying for the Fetalveros, especially Doods!
