Do you know that as little as 42 KR (4 euro) can reduce infection-related neonatal mortality by up to 40% (Blencowe et al., 2011) in one part of the world where 3 out of every 100 babies born die during their first month of life (World Bank, 2017)?

Our very own Gio, who has been the director of SOGH since January 2019, is committed to curbing these numbers by celebrating her birthday with SOGH, as she has been doing for the past 4 years. Come join us in wishing her a happy birthday by supporting the greater cause of the Mama & Family project, which provides support to pregnant women in a rural area of southeast Uganda.

Celebrate with us our director’s birthday and make all the births at the Mama & Family project safe!

"Each donation makes one more birth safer. There’s no better gift I can ask for.", Gio, Director of SOGH

Gio is an infectious diseases scientist by training and a non-profit leader by experience. However, she defines herself as a systems thinker because she believes people’s health and wellbeing could thrive just if we address issues at the system level.

She has been the director of SOGH since January 2019, but she joined the organization in 2017 when she was a master’s student in Biomedicine at Karolinska Institutet (KI). After graduating from KI, she worked as a researcher on a neglected tropical disease, called Visceral Leishmaniasis, at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. There she had the opportunity to engage with internal university groups that focus on planetary health advocacy and decolonizing global health activism. She brought her learning back to SOGH and, due to those experiences, she also decided to start a master’s in Sustainable Management at Uppsala University. She graduated in June 2021 with a thesis that focused on academic activism and responsibility. In May 2021, she also co-authored a policy paper titled “Five Pathways toward Health Environment Policy in a Wellbeing Economy” published by the Wellbeing Economy Alliance. Now she is working as Conference & Network Development Assistant at HealthCare Without Harm Europe, a non-profit organization based in Brussels.

Donate from the 18th of March,2022 until April 15th, 2022, and join hands with Gio who is not only serving SOGH with her knowledge, expertise, time, and energy but also with a heart full of caring, sharing, and passion.

All proceeds will be directed to create a bearable working environment and deliver a quality maternal and child health service by equipping the health facility with basic birth kits. And also to provide our resilient community health workers, midwife, and project coordinator working on the Mama and Family project with their basic salary and financial incentive.

Currently, we have a total of 12 community health workers and 1 midwife covering a total of 6 remote villages in the Mayuge District in Southeastern Uganda. In the year 2021, our team provided antenatal care services for 471 pregnant women, distributed 320 birth kits, attended 138 live births through safe delivery, provided 825 home visits and a general 1663 out-patient services. Even though, we are currently having a tremendous financial constraint posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic, with this fundraising we highly aim to strengthen our project and continue impacting many lives.

A donation of as little as 34 KR covers the financial incentive of one community health worker, 42 KR covers the cost of one birth kit & 800 KR covers the monthly salary of our midwife.

Who we are:

Swedish Organization for Global Health (SOGH) is a Swedish non-profit and non-governmental organization comprised of students and young professionals who share a passion to contribute to global health through evidence-based action.

Together with our local and international partners, we engage in conversations with local communities to co-develop projects that bring a concrete positive change and take environmental and economic sustainability into account. While supporting projects both in Sweden and in low-income countries, we use our virtual and physical platforms to bring awareness about some of the most neglected health topics, such as women’s reproductive health.
