Let’s bring Education to Mazraat Djej Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon (Chouf)

Project overview Help us build a community center to provide French, English, Math and Arabic classes to refugees of Mazraat Djej (children and adults). The shelter will also include a library and serve as a gathering area. Timeline: From October 2016 to September 2017 Beneficiaries: 9 Syrian refugees families in Mazraat Djej (area of Joun, Chouf, Lebanon)

• General Observations : humanitarian emergency

Today, Syrian refugees in Lebanon account for about 25% of the overall population (UNHCR, 2015). Despise all the efforts of international and local NGOs, access to education, water sanitation, food and health care is insufficient.

In the area of Joun, over 140 Syrian families are living in small shelter units (SSU), collective shelters (CS), informal settlements (IS) or low standard accommodation. Many of the children do not yet have access to public schools and most of the women do not have any activities.

• Mazraat Djej : Their story

While men work in the chicken farm, women and children remain in their “homes” with no activities, no hope, nothing to play with, nothing to look forward to.

With the support of Annas Linnas and other volunteers we decided to give French classes. Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim El Arbid (refugee in Mazraat Djej) kindly offers us his “terrace” in the camp to provide our classes to the 25 children. They are very enthusiastic and very focused, waiting for us at 4pm sharp from Monday to Thursday.

Why French and Englsih calsses? : the Lebanese education program is taught in Arabic and French or English for scientific subjects (maths, biology, physics). It is thus impossible to succeed at school without a mastering one or the other language. Nearby this camp, French is the second language.
