OHCRN recognizes that we live under a structure of law and governance that legalizes inherently unsustainable practices such as fracking, its related infrastructure – pipelines and injection wells, factory farms, and commercial water withdrawals. While growing numbers of people realize a shift to sustainability is necessary, efforts to achieve that end are blocked by our legal structure. Communities attempting to keep out fracking or factory farms are told by state government that they lack the authority to do so, preempting them by adopting legislation that recognizes only the state is the governing authority on that issue. As well, corporations sue our communities, claiming that restricting or banning their projects violates their corporate constitutional “rights.”

Increasingly, Ohio Communities are recognizing that fundamental change must occur in order to survive. Not only must we stop unsustainable practices, we must also change our legal system such that the highest legal protections, and thus the highest societal value, are placed on sustainability and nature. We must make sustainability legal.

OHCRN formed in response to the needs of Ohio communities engaged in the rights-based, grassroots organizing work of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF). Today CELDF is working in communities across the country to assert their civil and political rights to local self-governance and the Rights of Nature. OHCRN, CELDF, and six other statewide Networks are partnering with the National Community Rights Network (NCRN) to advance these rights for all people and communities.

OHCRN Fundraising

OHCRN recognizes that change must come up from the grassroots – from the people themselves, and our work assists the communities in which we live, and beyond, to make that change.

Our work is most effective when we are on-the-ground, meeting face-to-face with the communities who have asked for our help. We provide education and outreach through public meetings, teaching one day Community Rights Workshops, and providing printed and online educational materials. As our communities advance their campaigns to drive community rights protecting air, water, and soil into law, the oil and gas industry and state government begin their efforts to quash community efforts.
