One of my birthday wishes this year is to ensure that lives, especially those on the front lines on the streets of Hong Kong, are being safeguarded. Whatever you might think about the level of violence of the protesters, there is no equivalent to the structural and institutional violence of the Hong Kong police force, Hong Kong government, and the arms of the Chinese Central government. This entire movement has been about preserving and ensuring that Hong Kong continues to operate under a high degree of autonomy under the Basic Law. Yet, the last few months have demonstrated to us that neither the government, nor Beijing is willing to back down. For those who have put themselves on the front lines, all I hope is that they receive the adequate support, under existing legal mechanisms, to ensure they are trialed in a fair and transparent manner.
Will you join me?
