Eli & Alexander's story - On April 12th, 2018, nightmare became reality as my infant’s life was forever changed. My son, Alexander, was born out of wedlock this past November – since Alexander’s birth, his mother and I share parenting duties on a 50/50 basis.
Upon leaving my care around 7pm on April 10th, my son was picked up by his mother. By the evening of April 11th, Alexander’s mother called explaining she took him to the ER because he was “not himself”. I asked her what they told her, and she said the doctors urged her to take him to the pediatrician the following morning. While meeting her at the doctor’s office, I noticed Alexander now had bruising on his head, was listless and moaning in pain. We took him to ER from there, in which he was life flighted to Roanoke. Then, on April 12th, we received the news that Alexander had a stroke due to an injury resulting from a strike to the head. I was told my son had been in the care of his mother’s boyfriend on April 11th. By the evening of the 13th, Alexander’s mother was escorted from the hospital leading to me receiving guardianship of my son within two weeks.
Alexander is now blind. Fifty percent of his brain was affected by the stroke, but my son has been a fighter, positively responding to the nurturing and care he has been given at Roanoke. We hope and pray that his brain will wire new pathways as he continues to grow.
Based on the doctor’s evaluation paperwork, the timeframe of the injury was estimated to be within 24 and 48 hours from admittance. Now, based on the broad timeline on the doctor’s report, me, as well as my mom, a retired RN, are now also under suspicion for his injury, as she was at my home with us on the 10th. I am just numb. Instead of taking him home after 21 days of being by his side, he is now in foster care.
I need help to get the best lawyer money can buy. It is my top priority to prove my mother nor myself had anything to do with Alexander’s injury, so we can move forward, continuing to nurture and care for my child. I cannot let Alexander down!
