Campaign Story
A mother, doctor and activist, Amira Ćerimagić is fighting for her right to a homebirth. In Bosnia and Herzegovina the healthcare system only allows giving birth in hospitals. Amira started a case with her lawyers for the right to have a home birth with a skilled attendant in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In preparing for the birth of her fourth child, Amira did not want to repeat the bad hospital birth experiences she had had with her first three children. She felt that the safest place for the birth of her fourth child was her own home with a skilled attendant, i.e. a midwife. However, despite the rights guaranteed to her by the Constitution and the Convention on Human Rights, Ms. Ćerimagić was denied the right to a home birth with a skilled attendant. As a result, in February 2021 Ms. Ćerimagić decided to start a legal case with her lawyers for obtaining these rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Even though our grandparents and even parents were born in their own homes, it has taken only one generation of children born in hospitals to have the basic human right to a dignified birth be taken away. Although the percentage of women who chose this form of birth is small, most countries allow, or at least don't forbid, skilled attendants.

It is unbelievable that women do not have the right to choose how they give birth. It is simply unacceptable.
