Hello there!

My name is Gillian Small and I’m currently in my last year of schooling for a Masters in Social Work! I have a passion for working with child and youth in both the education and advocacy fields. I would love to be able to spend some time traveling after graduation to explore human service agencies in other cultures and environments. I’m asking for help in raising funds to go to Guatemala after graduation and volunteer at an Orphanage called Casa de Guatemala!

I am hoping to raise $1,500US in order to pay for both the volunteer fee and travel fees involved. The volunteer fee is $250US a week and I would like to volunteer for at least two weeks. The travel fees can run in between $400-700US dollars depending on the prices of the airfare. Any funding raised over the $1,500 will be donated directly to the organization.

While volunteering at Casa de Guatemala I will be able to improve on my language skills in Spanish. Due to the children not speaking my first language of English, most of my days will be spent practicing and using their native language of Spanish. I will also get an opportunity to experience and understand how other countries serve and work with human service agencies that are in care of children. Focusing on working for a youth population in my studies during graduate school will also provide in helping me when planning and interacting with the youth I meet abroad.

This has been one of my main determinations to complete ever since I researched and came across the organization about year ago. I love volunteering and working with children in my own community but would also like to reach out and experience the world around me!
