With the pandemic having a potential long term impact to local supply chains and food security in Kenya, our group of 17 widows have identified egg production as an unmet market in their communities, which may provide an opportunity to engage in revenue making activities that also benefit their access to food.
We are therefore appealing to our donors and supporters to help us provide each widow led family with a brood of laying hens and a locally made chicken coup with an integrared planter, ideal for a kitchen garden where only a small space is available for growing.
The first months poultry feed, egg trays, water and food dispensers will also be included as well as seed packs for vegetables and herbs to improve food security, wherein the organic fertilizers produced by the hens will have cost saving benefits.
Each widow will be given basic guidelines for inventory, overheads and finance managenent to enable her to set her own goals and targets whilst making sure the micro- business keeps running successfully.
