My name is Wendy Ngwenya (age 24), doing my second year in legal studies at Wits University. I am originally from Zimbabwe but raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am from a family of six, being the eldest daughter with three siblings and parents who are self-employed in informal trading services. I am passionate about life and the lessons it offers, I am motivated to find opportunities that allows individual to grow and exceed their expectations, and I am an individual that uses creativity to solve problems.

In my first year of studies, I was employed as a part-time educator at a skate school in Johannesburg so I could assist my parents to cover my fees and through my parent's diligent efforts, I was able to complete my first BA degree in Public Management and Governance from the University of Johannesburg in 2017. My interest around policy making, legislation and security grew tremendously in the past few years surrounding my first degree and field of work. After noticing this, I decided to expose myself to the legal field, where I was employed as a Junior legal administrative clerk in 2018 to familiarise myself with the daily operations I would be required to do after completing my degree.

I am captivated by the need to empower, educate and finding solutions to socio-economic issues in society, improving welfare and development for youth. Through legal studies, I can upskill and acquire knowledge to best share with those that do not have access to information concerning legal matters. The legal field allows candidates to tackle challenges posed by society and seek solutions for them, it also allows candidates to express their creativity yet still be technical and bring order to malfunctioning areas. My aspirations are to qualify and grow as an advocate, own a firm that will comprise of psychologist and environmentalist specialists to empower local communities. To serve as an information hub to most vulnerable communities.

After completing my first degree, I became a full-time educator at skate school which is an NPO that empowers youth through education, skateboarding and mentors young leaders that will bring solutions to their challenged communities. My greatest achievement as an educator has been, being a role model to youth that has been previously marginalised because of having migrant backgrounds. Being an educator with a similar story, making it in diaspora despite challenges we might come across gave them hope to shine despite their backgrounds, I was also afforded the opportunity to travel to Europe in 2019 to present challenges that are faced in social programmes that aim to empower of youth South Africa. I am inspired by everyone making a living in diaspora, students educate themselves so they can have a better future and parents that work diligently to put their children through school.

I was an educator for almost six years, working with low-income communities. My main roles included curriculum development, youth leadership and fund-raising campaigns that highlighted student growth stories in our programmes. Through this platform I was able to save up for my fees, even after that, it is not enough due inflation of fees each year. I do not qualify for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme funding because I am not a South African Citizen. After completing my studies, I want to continue with community engagement, youth empowerment, mentorship and assist with paying registration fees for students in need.

I would be so grateful for the opportunity to study and grow with your donations, any amounts are greatly appreciated. Through your donations, I would not have to worry about debt accumulating, the university withholding of academic results but excel as a student. Finally studying and working towards something I have always been passionate about, motivates me.

  • To my dearest supporters, My campaign officially expires today, a huge thank you for being part of my journey and donating to my funding goals. :) Law school continues to be a bit of a challenge (yet the most challenging degree I have ever studied - Haha I might just study Medicine after this. Law school makes you feel like you can accomplish anything after you graduate), but I love it and we push on. Much love and blessing upon your lives. Wendy Ngwenya
