Dear prospective donor,

Our names are Ananth K. Shetty, Anish Nandalike and Harsha C. Alva.

We are Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) students attempting to make a CNC Laser Cutting Machine out of used consumer electronics. So far, we have spent around INR 3500 ($55) buying DVD-ROMs, laser housing, stepper drivers, tools, etc.

We have dissassembled 8 DVD-ROMs for lasers and stepper leadscrews. The work locating/table movement mechanism is working fine.

But, we have run out of luck in finding Class 3B lasers. Each used DVD-ROM costs us about INR 300 ($4.7), and even DVD-ROMs that are supposed to contain Class 3B lasers fail to do the job for us.

This is when we decided to buy a 500 mw laser module online from China, but that alone costs $30. Also, we need another $20 for laser safety goggles, without which we will eventually become blind due to exposure to powerful laser beams. The links to these items are given below.

Since we don't have the funds, we are approaching donors who can support us.

This project of ours is completely based on open-source software and hardware. We are using an Arduino Duemilanove and GRBL to interpret CNC code sent from a PC and stepper drivers to locate the workpiece.

When we finish this project, we'll write an Instructable/blog on how we did it with pictures and videos. We believe we are giving back to society every bit of money we spend on this project. If you need further clarifications or assurances, feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your time.

The Micro Laser Cutter Team.
