Between April and July, I will be working for La Choza Chula (The Cool Shack), a not for profit organisation based in the small community of El Paredón on the Pacific Coast of Guatemala. They specialise in community development, education and entrepreneurship (visit www.lachozachula.org to find out more). I will be working there for three months teaching English at the primary school in El Paredón.

In an aim to address the poor literacy rate of El Paredón and more widely support the learning and education of this community, in 2014 La Choza Chula opened the community's first library. Based within the primary school grounds, the library has an extensive collection of books, including pre-school and adult sections, and it allows them to have a space to run daily literacy classes and story time.

However, this is only the beginning. Although there is a growing rate of library membership among the children within the school, for those outside of the school system the library and its amazing resources remain out of reach.

But we hope to change all of this, by creating a mobile library!

To do this, we need to raise funds to buy the wonderful librarian a bicycle.

A beautiful, brand new bicycle, including a metal rack, would allow her to travel once a week to different parts of the community, explain about the library and its benefits, encourage them to sign up as members and attend community events.

The initial cost to start the mobile library would be £150, enabling them to reach hundreds more in this beautiful community. After we reach our goal of £150, if you would still like to make a donation, the money will go towards ordering new books to add to the library’s collection.

  • Great cause and what a fab idea to use a bike! When I was little my grandfather used to take me to the local library all the time, and then he opened one from his house in India for all the children, and adults, who didn't have that luxury. I'm sure this will have just as great an impact :) xx
