Kuya Carlito’s Battle

We started Kuya Carlito's battle on March 30, 2019 when his doctor at the Chinese General Hospital (CGH) advised that he needed an emergency Appendectomy due to Appendicitis. During his operation, the doctors have found out that his appendix, filled with jelly-like substance, also called mucin, has ruptured. Since it has ruptured, the mucin has spread to some parts of his colon. The biopsy results confirmed he had Low-Grade Appendiceal Cancer. Due to this, his doctors at CGH advised that he needed to undergo a second operation, Right Hemicolectomy, as soon as possible. The said procedure is needed so that the portion of his colon, where the mucin has spread, can be removed to prevent further spread of the disease.

We've found out that the 2nd operation will not be covered 100% by his HMO provider as he has maxed out his benefits already. We had to take out a loan to fund the hospital bills. We are blessed to have family and friends who extended help in covering the hospital bills and his medications.

The 2nd operation last April 13, 2019 was a success eventhough they had removed a foot-long part of his colon. Post operation advised on top of his medications was to have a regular work up every 6months to monitor if there are any recurrence of cancer.

Fast forward to July 3, 2020, he found out that the result of his June 2020 CTScan confirmed a recurrence. His doctor at CGH said he needed a HIPEC surgery which they do not offer at the moment. He was referred to St. Lukes hospital where HIPEC surgery is estimated at around Php2M.

Fortunately, PGH has a team that performs the HIPEC surgery at the same quality but at a lower cost. The PGH doctors have confirmed that he has Low Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm (LAMN) wherein HIPEC is needed to either (1) eliminate the cancer cells fully or (2) lower the rate of recurrence.
