Kurt, “The Great Knight”

Hi, this is Sharon Gay Racines Magtalas-San Pascual, 41 years old from Carmona Makati. I am married and a mother of two. I was previously employed in one of the fast food chains in Quezon City as a service crew and eventually became a branch manager until I conceived my youngest child. It was around November of 2013 when my husband noticed that my tummy was getting bigger hence I seeked medical advice and found out I was carrying a child but there were lots of complications during my pregnancy. I developed Gestational diabetes (luckily controlled by diet) and heavy bleeding. The doctors advised me to be confined in a hospital for close monitoring but since we do not have enough budget for that we agreed to just stay home, and they put me in a complete bed rest ever since. My pregnancy post to be a high risk one so we decided, my husband and I, that I stop working and resigned from work. On April 25 ,2014 my water broke, and I was rushed to the hospital. They did an emergency cesarean section due to the unstable status of my unborn son. Everything happened so fast and I could not remember all the explanations the doctor gave me, all I remembered was how hard I prayed to God to save my son. I learned when I woke up that Royce Kurt, my youngest, was born not breathing, was resuscitated and was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). There was an irreversible damaged to his brain and the doctor said that he will be on a vegetative state for the rest of his life and he might not make it till 1 year old. He could not hear nor see well, also could not suck nor swallow and that is why he is feeding through a tube up until now. He could not walk nor move his arms very well. We stayed in the hospital for __ months and the bill blow out of control. Luckily the hospital is generous enough to agree for us to pay in an installment basis that is why we were able to go home. It is so heart breaking for a mother to see her son suffering but I need to be his strength at times like this. I will not give up on finding ways so that I can give him a chance in life. Therefore, I am here, trying to knock in your generous hearts and asking for a helping hand. I can see his drive to live, how strong my Kurt is, so who I am to give up. For 4 years we are fighting and will continue to fight. Sadly, fighting spirit alone could not make it and we need money to sustain his medical needs. The ones we struggled the most are the following:

• his PEG tube (tube in his stomach where he eats) needs to be replaced once a year to avoid infection,
• he needs therapy for his arms, swallowing every other day which we could only afford a weekly schedule
• his medicines and specialized milk that costs us a fortune
• frequent hospital visits and laboratory works
• hospital bill

As much as I wanted to provide my child all the things he needs out of our own pocket, we could not do it anymore, and we need your help to give him this chance to live.
