Koh Tan Conservation Center is a new project aiming to open in August on the small tropical island of Koh Tan, just south of Koh Samui in Thailand. This island has been over-fished and exploited for decades by unrestricted tourism and it's the aim of the center to use the downturn due to coronavirus to help restore the island to it's former glory. www.kohtancc.com
The project will use volunteers and interns to map the reefs of the island, and begin the restoration on key sights in the area, as well as expanding the mangrove forests and educating the locals on the importance of conserving what is on the island for future generations. The puzzle pieces are already falling into place, the mayor of the island is on board, and an onsite resort (that is largely abandoned) for volunteer accommodation, and an onsite reception area to convert into a visitor center later down the line.
The aim of this gogetfunding campaign is to enable us to purchase the equipment we need to push this project forward. The money will be used for purchasing diving equipment and an on site air compressor, which will reduce the running costs of the project considerably in these early stages. There is a lot of the reef to map and identify before the restoration can begin, and to do that we desperately need this equipment.
From scuba tanks to coral survey equipment, the money donated will make a real difference to the project!
The funding is set to BHT which is roughly 31baht to 1 USD towards the total amount of $2500usd!
