Hi friends,

The Killjoy Prophets Collective has been working for the last 6+ months to wrap our heads around how to connect faith to larger organizing campaigns for racial and gender justice. We believe that too often the church can justify oppressive practices, both historically and presently, rather than truly centering the needs and voices of the most marginalized. We see Jesus as a revolutionary that came to overthrow state power and violence and refuse to be silent as we see people continually use "God" as an excuse for US nationalism.

When I was graduating college, I was completely at a crossroads in deciding whether to go into ministry or activism. I was involved with both as a student and always felt these two words (faith and activism) could not exist together. After a couple years of learning and growing, I'm realizing that my activism is my ministry. With the formation of the Killjoy Prophets I have new hope in the possibility of faith being truly put into action. I hope to start seminary in a year, but until then I want to focus on organizing and ministry.

Although I would love to fund my own ministry work, I have my proceeds from when I was public speaking into grassroots movements. I have helped with countless fundraisers for other groups, but this is my first time asking anyone to help fund a project I am directly working on. Please know I am humbly and hesitantly asking for your support, knowing all too well myself that donating to something or someone isn't always a financial reality (economic violence sucks and I don't want you to feel pressured)!

The money will:

1) Pay our web developer and our artist, both women of color who do amazing work and deserve to be compensated well!

2) Cover initial costs of putting together fundraising events for larger women of color justice campaigns as well as local campaigns (sketch artists, screenprinting, cups, food, flyers, etc.)

3) Allow me to hold intergroup dialogue on racial reconciliation. I will be able to purchase educational materials such as books, binders, and light snacks for those engaging in the uncomfortable work of intergroup dialogue with someone as scary as me.
4) Cover startup costs for our first ever Killjoy Prophets conference this Spring in Chicago so we can keep the cost of attendence as low as possible for those interested in attending.

I will send a biweekly newsletter to all of our funders to make sure you see that we are a ministry worth investing in. It has been a strange and difficult year for me and I want nothing more than to organize with Killjoy Prophets (and ending dudebro Christianity and white heteropatriarchy would be nice too).

Please let me know if you would like to speak with my personally (on Skype, phone, or in person if you're local) to get a better feel for our collective as we prepare to launch!
Please email us at [email protected] if you would like to get in touch privately!

Love and Peace,
Suey Park

  • When I was deciding what to do after undergrad, I considered seminary or a PhD. I chose the PhD, thinking it would better equip me to advocate for the same things you are interested in. After working at a church for a few years, I was not convinced it was a place where I could a) do all the work I wanted to do and b) be all the person I aspired to be. I am so encouraged to see you thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries. Good luck!
