Joel and the Kidney Bean

Update posted by Steven Douglas Herder On Jan 14, 2022

In just 64.5 hours, the village came together and made their collective voices heard in support of Joel Laurier. I'm pretty sure no one (including me) thought that we would reach our stated goal so quickly, if at all. When setting up the campaign, there were many decisions to be made, one of the first was to set a financial goal. What a nightmare trying to pick a number out of thin air! Part of me thought that based on all of the love shown to Joel as Facebook comments, there would be others who would like to send money to him as well. I guessed that it might be possible in 35 days, to MAYBE find 100 people who might send an average of ¥10,000 yen each.

Well, was I ever wrong...

At this point 94 of us have contributed online and another 5 have made alternative plans to send money by bank transfer or snail mail. I'm guessing that there have also been dozens of people who have tried but failed to send a donation by credit card. Due to increased online fraud, everyone now has to have an enhanced security measure called "3D Secure" enabled on credit cards. It is quite simple to turn on but frustratingly difficult to find in English or in Japanese on the credit card's website. The solution to this problem has been PayPal. Everyone says that it is very easy to make a transaction that way.

While we are thrilled that we reached our initial goal, I hope that those who still want to contribute will consider making a donation right up until the Valentine's Day deadline. This year, 2022, is going to be a very long year for Joel to get back to normal healthwise, and equally challenging to secure a new job from April 2023. Believe me, every one of your donations matters!

Finally, I want to thank a number of you who have sent me private messages of thanks for starting the campaign. Besides my initial fears of stepping outside of my comfort zone, the whole thing was pretty much a no-brainer. Joel is one of the good guys - hardworking, generous, kind, and genuine. I absolutely love what we all did together. It has been a breath of fresh air in these tumultuous times of COVID-19. Let's not forget to show appreciation to one of the real heroes of this story - the donor who has agreed to make a life-changing gift to herself and to Joel. The mother of Patty will forever be a part of Joel's story from March 17th onwards...

To all of the donors present and future, take a moment to feel good about the start to 2022. We did a good thing.

Hello everyone,

It has been 24 hours since I began the "Joel and the Kidney Bean" campaign. Your collective generosity has blown the minds of a growing number of people. It is a testament to the power of love, and just another shining example of "the power of the people" when we get together and work towards a common goal.

There have been a number of you who have tried to donate but gotten error messages. If you can use PayPal, I promise it will go through easily. If you want to use a credit card, there is a new level of security required called "3D Secure". You can quite easily enable it on the website of your credit card issuer. If all else fails, you can contact me through Facebook and I can make other arrangements to receive your gift.

When I started this campaign, I thought to myself, if just a hundred people responded, Joel would be thrilled. JOEL IS ALREADY THRILLED AT 55 PEOPLE. However, I would still love to see us get to 100 people. While this is a huge amount of love, I imagine Joel will be struggling to make ends meet until the spring of 2023, and whatever we can offer him will be used wisely.

To tell the truth, I was very nervous when I clicked the "Start Campaign" button at 19:00 last night. What if, in fact, I was the only one who actually wanted to send a financial gift to Joel? I cannot express my appreciation for your generosity. With all of the pain and suffering of the past two years, this is a soul-nourishing happy story that we can all be very proud of.

I think we will hear a message from Joel within the next few hours (he didn't get enough sleep last night, I hear).

Love to you all,

Steven

To all Patty’s angels: The support you have shown me and my donor (and Patty) has been tremendous. A simple thank you is not enough to convey our appreciation. We, or more precisely, you, all you Patty’s angels, have met and even exceeded the established goal. It will go a long way in helping me pay part of my medical costs, and for that I will be forever endebted to you all. A special thanks to Steven Herder for initiating this campaign. His enthusiasm for this drive, and everyone’s charitable support, have motivated me to push myself even harder toward accomplishing my goal: regaining good health and being able to find a job in 2023. I know the real struggle has yet begun. While I am in pain daily, the post operation battle will be the tougher part. But for now, I am just so elated that you have taken the time to show me your support. I can feel the love. And if you can send some prayers my way on March 17, that would go a long way in welcoming Patty into my life.

Steve, I’m really glad you started this campaign. I was thrilled to be able to help out. Our JALT family came together to help a member and it means a lot to be a part of this group. I hope we have more than 100 people donating to help Joel.

I spoke with Joel this morning. He is positive about the kidney transplant. He is not sure about anything else at the moment. Cue friends and colleagues...
