The ability to provide school going children with food in Kenya greatly determines their school attendance and performance. The Kibera YMCA is located in Kibera slums which is the largest slum in Africa characterized by high levels of poverty. Parents will only send their children to schools that will provide free meals at the school or if its not provided they would rather work than go to school. Schools in Kibera struggle with sustaining a feeding program as the as the fees paid by the parents is very little and sometimes it is hardly paid or paid very late. When students attend classes on empty stomachs they will hardly concentrate in class therefore affecting their performance. Most of the pupils rely on the food provided at school and some even carry it home to share with their families. By providing meals at the school it will go a long way in making these pupils to attend school and focus on their academic work as well as improved nutrition. A guaranteed feeding program will ensure that children in Kibera have access to education.
