ABOUT US

The Mzansi Theatre Project Advancement (MTPA) is a youth registered non-profit organization. Mzansi Theatre Projects is based in a small township outside Pietermaritzburg called Kwa-Pata.Mzansi Theatre Projects is the initiator of an innovative Studio Theatre situated in a Township. Studio Theatre is a platform for young and upcoming theatre practitioners where every second and last Friday of the month a platform is opened for local and provincial art artist to stage their shows. We are an organization committed to writing and producing art works that speak to the reality our community is experiencing every day. The organization is committed to distancing the youth away from street corners which aids in the reduction of crime. The organization has been working with school children in creating better self-esteem, with a vision to the upliftment of the whole community. Mzansi is also creating awareness programs on child pregnancy and the various struggles that our children face on a daily basis. The organization has started a book club focused on children’s reading skills, where we read stories for them and have discussions on the story. This helps them to understand and learn, whilst developing their listening and comprehension skills. The company also works with the youth on theatre plays that portray issues affecting our communities.

KHULANI ARTIST IN RESIDENCY

Mzansi Theatre is hosting this residency with an aim of developing artistic skills for community theatre groups in and around Pietermaritzburg. This training programme is an annual project which started in 2016. The success of that one day training forced Mzansi Theatre to think and take a decision whether we listen to the concerns that the artist had which spoke to the limited time for training. The groups and individuals suggested that this program should at least take two days to cover in details some of the skills. Mzansi Theatre therefore as a response to the demands of the artist in Pietermaritzburg then developed the idea of Khulani Artist In Residency (KAIR) programme. The KAIR is aimed at developing artistic skills in the field of theatre performance. These are the skills the KAIR will be focusing on;

  • Directing and Acting Workshop
  • Stage combat
  • Scripts writing
  • New concept development
  • Mentoring of theatre shows

This residency will take three days.
