What is it about? Why We're Going...

Shannon and Jenn Go to Africa!

We’ve made it! After our three year experience as graduate students studying education, we are excited to travel to Kenya and work with children. We are passionate about education and have decided to take our passion abroad. We hope to become culturally responsive classroom teachers and want to pursue this wonderful experience working with Kenyan teachers and children. Through a four-week stay, we will be spending a week volunterring at the Jirani Project, a service project that provides orphaned Keynan children with shelter, schooling and other supports. After our experience with the Jirani Project, we will be relocating to the city of Nairobi. During our stay in Nairobi, we will be working with local education students studying at the university level. We will then venture out to local schools within the city to work with elementary-aged students and local classroom teachers. Throughout our experiences within the local classrooms, we will be conducting interviews with early childhood educators to gain a broader cultural understanding of their educational philosophy. We also hope to share the knowledge we have gained as graduate students by leading professional development sessions. We will be working directly with students in the classroom and are excited to gain an understanding of education in a different cultural context.

We are enthusiastic and anxiously awaiting this adventure! We are passionate about cultural education and hope to receive the opportunity to make this project possible!

The breakdown of our budget:

Our target goal for travel expenses is $6,600. Any donations we receive that exceed this amount will be donated directly to the Jirani Project to help support its mission.

Airfare: $4,000

Accommodations: $1,600

Misc. Expenses (visa, immunizations, reasearch materials): $1,000

*For donations that are $50.00 or more, we will send photographs from our Kenya experience!!
