QUICK UPDATE:

Ken-ken's BILATERAL ROTATIONPLASTY was completed last March 7, 2019 and he was discharged from the hospital after two weeks. He's still due for chemo, but he's recovering really well and already being so positive about all of this despite the fact that both his feet were turned 180 degrees backward.

You may check out our facebook pages to see some photos we shared, although we still try to limit these for the time being for personal reasons.

***************************************************************************************************************************

BACKGROUND:
KEN-KEN, Kleent Dexter Dela Cruz, an eight year old active and loveable boy, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (an aggresive bone cancer) last summer. Although this dreadful illness takes its toll on him, his eyes are always hopeful and deep with thoughts. He knows what he's going through and how it all ends up with his legs being severed along with the tumor on his knees. He never loses courage and we even started looking through what will be his prosthetic legs. He's fighting an admirable battle and we will always be there to support him - through each step of the way, through every sleepless night and quiet evenings, through each tear and laughter, through joy and pain, through chemotherapy and surgery.

After his 2nd open biopsy

1st open biopsy wound - left leg (knee)

2nd open biopsy wound - right leg (knee)

DIAGNOSIS

His is a RARE case of BILATERAL OSTEOSARCOMA on both distal femurs, without any detectable distant metastasis to other organs, thankfully. Since the tumors are on his lower extremities, we believe these to be resectable, perhaps thru rotationplasty or whatever his doctors may recommend for his case. By the end of his chemotherapy and surgery, we expect him to start adjusting to life with a disability. Despite this, we hope and pray for his full recovery after osteosarcoma.

Also, we were told by his doctors that there have only been 16 DOCUMENTED CASES of BILATERAL OSTEOSARCOMA in the span of 30 years, worldwide.

Bone scan results - osteoblastic activity in BOTH FEMURS

TREATMENT PROTOCOL:
He had his first chemotherapy on September 13 - 16, with cisplatin and doxorubicin over an 18-week protocol, with definitive surgery scheduled on week 9.

First chemotherapy cycle (24-hr IV cisplatin)

Going into his 2nd chemo cycle, still feverish

Chicken dinner while waiting for fever to go away

Start of 2nd chemo with 24-hr cisplatin infusion

After three (3) cycles of chemotherapy, his doctors will assess his response to the drugs before proceeding with the surgery. It will either be above-knee amputation or rotationplasty on both legs, but they are recently considering SAVING AT LEAST ONE OF HIS LEGS, either through a metal prosthesis or other possible methods.

FAMILY BACKGROUND:
His family has been assessed to be financially incapable to pay for his whole treatment, from chemotherapy up to rehabilitation and long-term follow-ups. His mom is a full-time housewife while his dad drives a pedicab. Average monthly income for their family is Php 5,000.00 to Php 6,000.00. That's not even enough to cover for one MRI scan, which costs at Php 7,500.00.

He has two (2) brothers, one who is older at 10-years-old and the other at 4-years-old.

EXPECTED TREATMENT COSTS:
We cannot fully estimate the costs of his whole treatment, which will involve the following:

  1. 18-week chemotherapy protocol
  2. Wide-excision surgery
  3. Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  4. Prosthesis for both legs
  5. Other contingencies
Online estimates put the total cost at more than $100,000 (US dollars). At the latest exchange rate, that'll be about Php 5.4 million. Luckily, we have several social services and charities that can cover most of this cost. It will entail long lines, but whatever the cost, we will see this through.

However, we will still be paying for out-of-pocket laboratory costs. Before his first chemotherapy started, we had to pay a total of Php 3,790.00 for his CT scan, MRI and bone scans. Right after his first chemo, we had to pay Php 2,000.00 for his cardiogram (2d-echo). That's a total of Php 5,790.00, more than their average monthly family income.

We expect to be incurring more out-of-pocket costs for his laboratory and medicines during and after treatment.

And this doesn't include everyday costs of taking care of Ken-ken, which will put additional strain on their family's budget.

TARGET DONATIONS:
If published estimates put the total cost at more or less Php 5.4 milliion, our initial target to help KEN-KEN WIN against osteosarcoma will be set at roughly 10% of this, or Php 500,000.00, in hopes that we can raise additional funding offline and thru charities / social services.

Whatever will be left after his treatment will cover for the following:

  1. Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  2. Prosthesis for both legs
  3. Future long-term follow-ups

BEST OUTCOME:
We want to give him the best outcome possible and we need all the help we can get.

For him to win against osteosarcoma, he needs our full support and, honestly, some good samaritans are a welcome addition to his team.

All funds will be accounted for through regular updates. These will be used for various laboratory costs, chemo drugs, medical procedures, rehabilitation after surgery, check-ups and other out-of-pocket costs directly attributable to KEN-KEN's winning knockout against cancer.

We love you so much, Ken, through the ups and downs of life.

*****************************************************************************

HOW CAN YOUR DONATIONS HELP KEN-KEN:

  1. It will cover the costs of laboratory tests and procedures, medicines and other in-patient and out-patient costs that cannot be shouldered by social services and health insurance to ensure that KEN-KEN deals a heavy knockout blow against osteosarcoma.
  2. It will cover the costs for his future prosthesis including physical therapy and rehabilitation.
  3. It will cover all other contingencies related to his complete treatment and healing.

  • Thank you all for the overwhelming support for Ken-ken and his family. He already did his first chemo cycle and his response to the drugs was generally ok. He will be scheduled for his next cycle in about 21 days or so. As of this writing, Ken-ken’s sodium level is back to normal and we are already waiting for his doctor’s discharge order. His appetite is slowly returning to normal (having eaten a whole slice of his favorite pepperoni pizza last night) and he’s in a good mood. We have yet to receive our first medical bill, but like we said, whatever the cost, we will see this through. We hope for your continuing support by sharing the link to his fundraising page and enjoying each winning moment in his battle against osteosarcoma. Ken-ken loves to hear from all those who are helping him. Lots of love, you guys!

  • I have lost my moms, yes - two moms - to Cancer. And I have witnessed how hard they've went through - emotional, spiritual, mental stress - not to mention the financial stress this dreadful disease brings to the family. I am hereby pledging to support Ken all the way. I hope this small amount may help the family in any way possible. God bless you Ken, God bless your family and may God bless all whom will help and pray with you.
