Keep the Bus Running!

The Community Bus, a joint effort between Safari Destinations and Travel for Impact, never fails to put a smile on your face as it heads towards you. This has been particularly true this year when the bus continued throughout all COVID-19 challenges carrying food to the elderly, kids to school and supporting those staying at the Shelter. When the bus concept began little did we realize the impact of the service for our partners and community; the bus has become a lifeline to all of our partners and the clients whom they serve.

The bus has a regular timetable where children are taken to school, the aged are supported with food deliveries, hospital visits, pension collection and WoMen Against Rape’s shelter is supported with transportation needs. Up until now we have been able to cover the operational costs for the bus but with limited funds the regular operations of the bus are jeopardized. The bus costs USD750.00 a month to operate but the value that it brings is priceless.

The Community Bus with its bright, cheery colours, stands out. Summed up in the words of the beneficiaries: 'The Community Bus has removed the stigma from the WAR Shelter children as now they travel with other children from school and are less identified with a shelter. It has further given the staff of WAR time to do other office work while assured that the children will be taken home safe and on time’ . And from Polokong: "I like the bus, every time I can just call and you come and pick me up for the hospital." … "Every day I am looking forward to see the bus coming. I like these people who don't know me, but just come and bring me food. I now sleep full every day."
