Girls face great challenges in terms of hygiene and sanitation. For girls who are menstruating, these problems compound the difficulties posed by the inability to afford sanitary towels as well as cultural taboos around menstruation. As a result, many girls miss on average four days of school every month, which is over a month in a year, meaning they fall behind in class and sometimes even drop out of school altogether. In addition this forces them to go for men to get menstrual material which in a long run turn into sex exchange. This is an added challenge to the already existing problems that lead to the high dropout rate of female students in primary and secondary schools.

The overall goal of the project will be to develop a low cost and accessible dignity pack for girls living in informal settlements of Mukuru Kwa Njenga in Kenya,Nairobi.Mukuru Kwa Njenga is a slum in the East of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. It belongs to Embakasi South Constituency, but extends into Makadara and Starehe constituencies. It is one of the largest slums in Nairobi.

The aim is to minimize, the number of day’s girls miss going to school and create socio-economic acceptance of the innovated product, procure sanitary pads and document all steps in the development process as a learning and monitoring tool. The dignity pack comprises of a small bag and two packets of sanitary pads. We are lucky to have support from Flora-African cotton industries, through their brand name and as collaborators we can be able to fundraise funds for the project.

Valley of Hope are a community based organization working with vulnerable adolescent girls, youth and women.
