You may have heard of the recent floods in Kashmir, where our papier mache artisans are based (which we buy through Asha Handicrafts). Raja Mugloo, the producer, writes, “It was like Tsunami and we didn’t even get any time to move…we have never witnessed such devastating floods. One of my raw material suppliers Mehraj-udin, his entire property and goods were completely submerged in water. The overall loss of lives and property has been severe. Our shop in Srinigar was completely submerged under 15 ft of water. Everything is washed away! We have nor been able to move everywhere as 80% of the roads are damaged and are still under water.” Thankfully none of Asha’s artisans lost their lives but the impact on their lives has been severe. Shared Earth is donating £1,000, raised from the sale of stamps which we ask our customers to return to us, to help them rebuild property, buy new raw materials such as paints and so on.
