In 2005, 18 year old Karl Hinett, a private in the Staffordshire Regiment, was serving in Iraq when his Warrior tank was surrounded by a mob and petrol bombed.

He was airlifted to the military hospital in Basra where he was treated, before being flown back to the UK for treatment at Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham.

Without tissue donors I would still be suffering and so would other troops who are risking their lives.

Karl underwent five years of skin grafts and operations at Selly Oak Hospital to heal his injuries.

Now fully recovered he is raising money for the Birmingham hospital where military personnel like him are treated. In 2011 and 2012 he ran a total of 100 marathons and he continues to undertake new challenges for the hospital's charity.

"I would urge anyone to donate," said Karl, 25. "I had three major emergency operations immediately after the incident. Without people donating their skin that wouldn't have been possible. I've had 16 operations in total. As they went on, doctors used more of my own skin for grafts.
